Rocky Mount Mayor Sandy Roberson has issued a formal call for community unity, urging residents to move beyond the political, racial, and geographic divisions that have recently characterized local discourse. In a public statement published Friday, the Mayor emphasized that the city’s future depends on collective action rather than finger-pointing.

Addressing the tendency to frame local challenges as conflicts between Edgecombe and Nash counties, or between opposing political and socioeconomic groups, Roberson argued that such divisions impede progress. “Rocky Mount’s success belongs to all of us, and so do its struggles,” he stated, noting that the city’s prosperity is inherently linked to the success of its individual neighborhoods and families.

While acknowledging that the American democratic process relies on spirited debate, the Mayor cautioned that the city has reached a critical juncture where it must decide if disagreement will lead to productive solutions or stagnation. He advocated for a shift toward cooperation over conflict, urging citizens to prioritize common goals over historical grievances.

“We can continue to focus on what separates us, or we can focus on what unites us,” Roberson wrote. The Mayor’s appeal concludes with a vision for a city where cooperation is valued over excuses, asserting that when residents work together regardless of background, the community is capable of overcoming any challenge.
