Cross-Operator Coordination
Two staff members from SBS Transit, Senior Assistant Interchange Supervisor Nithyananthan Palne (known as Nathan) and Senior Interchange Supervisor Alex Tan, have been commended for their role in recovering a bag containing approximately $32,000 in cash and gold jewelry. The incident occurred earlier in July 2026 when a passenger, identified as Mrs. K, accidentally left her belongings on a bus operating under Service 853.
Upon realizing her loss, the distressed passenger approached the team at the Ang Mo Kio Interchange. Although Service 853 is operated by Tower Transit Singapore, rather than SBS Transit, Palne immediately initiated communication with the relevant operator to trace the missing item. The coordination proved successful; within 20 minutes, Tower Transit confirmed that a fellow passenger had discovered the bag and handed it over to their staff.
Beyond Routine Assistance
The situation presented a further logistical hurdle when the passenger realized she lacked the funds to travel to the required interchange to retrieve her belongings. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Alex Tan provided personal financial assistance by booking and paying for a taxi for Mrs. K to reach Yishun Interchange, where the bag was held.
The successful recovery allowed the passenger to reclaim her items, which reportedly included a passport and gold jewelry intended for her daughter’s upcoming wedding in Kuala Lumpur. A week after the incident, the passenger returned to the Ang Mo Kio Interchange to personally thank the staff and reimburse Tan for the taxi fare.
Public Service Recognition
SBS Transit highlighted the event on its social media channels on July 22, 2026, sharing a letter of appreciation from the passenger. In her correspondence, she praised the staff for their “exceptional assistance” during a “distressing incident.” The story has since garnered positive attention from the public, with many social media users commending the staff for their initiative and willingness to cooperate across different transit operators to assist a commuter.
For the staff involved, the gesture was framed as a standard commitment to public service. “We were just happy that she got her bag back,” Tan remarked following the public recognition. He noted that the experience had also impacted his own family, with his daughter expressing a desire to emulate such actions in the future.
