A Major Shift in Sports Broadcasting
Taylor McGregor, a foundational figure for the Marquee Sports Network since its 2020 inception, has announced her departure from her role as the Chicago Cubs’ primary sideline reporter. As reported by the Chicago Tribune, McGregor is transitioning to a full-time position at ESPN, effective immediately following the conclusion of the 2026 MLB regular season. This move marks a significant evolution in her career, shifting from the daily grind of regional baseball coverage to a broader national portfolio.
McGregor, 33, has maintained a dual-career path for several years, balancing her responsibilities at Marquee with college football sideline reporting for ESPN since 2019. Her expanded role at the national network will now encompass NBA coverage, potential college basketball assignments, and increased opportunities to host “SportsCenter.”
The Decision Behind the Transition
For McGregor, the decision to leave the Cubs’ beat was driven by the demanding nature of a 162-game schedule. “I love everyday baseball, but it’s every day and I’ve been doing it for nine years and I felt ready to have a little bit more time in my personal life,” McGregor explained to the Chicago Tribune. She emphasized that her long-term goals, including personal milestones like marriage and starting a family, were difficult to manage under the rigorous travel and daily broadcast demands of regional baseball.
Her colleagues, including play-by-play announcer Jon “Boog” Sciambi, expressed a mix of professional pride and personal loss. Sciambi noted that McGregor’s ability to connect with the audience through her unique energy and preparation made her an essential part of the broadcast trio alongside color commentator Jim Deshaies. The Cubs organization, through Chief Commercial Officer Colin Faulkner, described the departure as “bittersweet,” acknowledging that while her exit leaves a significant vacancy, the move to a national role is a natural and deserved step in her career.
Looking Ahead for Marquee Sports Network
Marquee Sports Network now faces the task of filling one of its most visible positions before the start of the 2027 spring training. According to Chicago Sun-Times reporting, the network plans to conduct a thorough search for a new field reporter. The rest of the core broadcast team, led by Sciambi and Deshaies, is expected to return for the upcoming season, maintaining continuity during the transition.
While McGregor will remain with Marquee through the postseason, her regular-season finale on Thursday marked the end of her daily presence at Wrigley Field. Her departure underscores a broader trend in sports media, where regional networks often serve as incubators for talent that eventually migrates to national platforms as their profiles and professional ambitions grow.
