Governance Crisis at FIFA
Balogun had originally been dismissed following a VAR review during a last-32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina after planting his boot into the ankle of defender Tarik Muharemovic. However, FIFA subsequently suspended the ban after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly stated he had contacted governing body leadership regarding the incident. Tebas argued that such direct political pressure undermining established disciplinary protocols exposes a profound structural flaw within FIFA.
“We have FIFA, which has overturned a red card because the president of a country called the FIFA president. This is the most serious incident in the history of football.
