Tennessee Volunteers starting tight end Ethan Davis will miss the remainder of the 2026 football season after sustaining an ACL injury during the team’s 45-24 victory over Georgia Tech on September 12. Head coach Josh Heupel confirmed the diagnosis during his weekly press conference on Monday, September 14, marking a significant personnel shift for the 2-0 Volunteers as they prepare for their upcoming matchup against Kennesaw State.
Davis, a senior who has been a central figure in the team’s offensive plans, suffered the injury while playing 38 snaps against the Yellow Jackets. According to 247Sports, the injury occurred to the same knee Davis had been managing with a brace and sleeve since the start of the season. Despite the limited mobility, Davis remained productive, recording three catches for 43 yards during the game and serving as a critical blocker in the team’s ground attack.
Adjusting the Offensive Rotation
The loss of Davis creates a void in Tennessee’s “12 personnel” packages, which typically utilize two tight ends simultaneously. Coach Heupel emphasized the “next man up” philosophy, noting that sophomore DaSaahn Brame and South Alabama transfer Trent Thomas are expected to take on expanded roles. Brame, who saw 24 snaps following Davis’s exit against Georgia Tech, has already contributed with key blocks on late-game touchdown runs.
“This game requires the next guy up,” Heupel said during his Monday media session. “You’ve got to be prepared for when your opportunity arises, and the next guy and multiple guys have to step up in that role.”
Davis’s career at Tennessee has been defined by resilience, having navigated multiple injuries since arriving in 2023. Despite a history of shoulder and collarbone issues, he had become a reliable target, posting 39 career receptions for 433 yards and six touchdowns. As a result of the NCAA’s “5-for-5” eligibility rule, Davis retains the option to return for a fifth season in 2027, according to Knox News.
Broader Injury Concerns
Davis is the fifth Tennessee player to sustain a season-ending injury during the 2026 campaign, a trend that has tested the team’s depth early in the year. The Volunteers have already lost cornerback Jadais Richard, safety Edrees Farooq, linebacker Jaedon Harmon, and wide receiver Joakim Dodson to significant ailments. Tennessee will look to maintain its momentum on September 19 when they face Kennesaw State at Neyland Stadium.
