A coordinated multi-platform revival of Roald Dahl’s iconic Wonka brand has officially taken shape in the United Kingdom, spanning both retail shelves and television programming. Confectionery manufacturer Ferrero has introduced an entirely new product range crafted at its Derbyshire facility, while streaming giant Netflix prepares to launch a high-stakes competition series based on the famous chocolate factory narrative.
The dual rollout highlights a growing trend among multinational consumer goods firms and entertainment networks to leverage nostalgic intellectual property across both physical and digital markets simultaneously.
From Alfreton Production Lines to Retail Shelves
Ferrero UK debuted six new Wonka-branded products in British supermarket chains Morrisons and Asda on September 14, 2026. The new line includes items such as Wonka Magic Hats, Wonka Oompa Loompa Milk Chocolate Hollow Figurines, Wonka Purplypurple Milk Chocolate Bars, Wonka Magic Garden Ropes, Wonka Oompa Loompa Gummies, and a Wonka Kinder Joy Egg. According to Retail Times, the products are slated for wider distribution across additional major UK and Irish retailers, including Tesco, starting October 22, 2026.
The product development was led by Ferrero’s Centre of Excellence in Alfreton, Derbyshire. Over the past decade, Ferrero has invested more than £35 million in modernizing the Alfreton plant, establishing it as a primary hub for specialized assortments and chocolate figure manufacturing within the global Ferrero Group.
“Our Alfreton team has played a key role in bringing the new Wonka range to life, combining deep confectionery expertise with the creativity, craft, and technical capability needed to reimagine such an iconic brand for today’s consumers,” stated Craig Barker, managing director of Ferrero UK and Ireland. Gary Youren, Head of R&D for Ferrero UK and Ireland, noted that the product design focused on combining nostalgic flavor profiles with interactive elements, such as popping candy and signature hazelnut praline fillings.
Translating Chocolate Nostalgia to High-Stakes Television
Alongside the physical product release, Netflix is set to premiere its unscripted competition series, Wonka’s The Golden Ticket, on September 23, 2026. The show adapts the classic factory tour narrative into a reality television format where 24 contestants, competing in 12 pairs, attempt to navigate factory challenges without having their tour terminated.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Alison Holloway revealed that thousands of applicants submitted entries within minutes of the project’s initial announcement. To recreate the surprise of the original story, finalists were filmed opening actual Wonka chocolate bars to discover whether they had secured a golden ticket to enter the factory competition.
The show’s opening sequence features several unselected hopefuls, including Big Brother season 28 contestant Drew Campbell and his then-girlfriend Vanessa, who reached the top 50 casting pool before missing out on the final cast. Holloway noted that beyond physical challenges, the competition relies heavily on psychological games among contestants vying for the cash prize.
Commercial Stakes and Industry Direction
Ferrero’s £35 million multi-year investment in Derbyshire positions the Alfreton facility to supply both domestic and international markets, including Ireland and select global territories. By linking physical product distribution with a high-profile Netflix premiere, both entities are testing the commercial boundaries of franchise extensions.
For Ferrero, the launch represents a strategic effort to capture market share in the premium and novelty chocolate sectors. For Netflix, the show reflects a broader strategy to transform recognized literary and cinematic worlds into repeatable competition formats. The coming weeks will demonstrate whether consumer response at retail checkouts aligns with viewership figures on streaming screens.
