US VP Criticizes Denmark Over Greenland Security

US Vice-President JD Vance has accused Denmark of failing to adequately invest in Greenland’s security and infrastructure during a visit to the Arctic island. Speaking at the Pituffik Space Base in northwest Greenland, Vance claimed that Greenland would be better off under the US security umbrella, citing threats from China and Russia.

Vance’s Message to Denmark

Vance stated, ‘Our message to Denmark is very simple: you have not done a good job by the people of Greenland. You have underinvested in the people of Greenland and you have underinvested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass.’ He emphasized that the US would ensure Greenland’s security, calling for a shift in leadership.

Greenland’s Response

Greenland’s political leaders have firmly rejected the idea of US annexation. Shortly before Vance’s arrival, four of Greenland’s five parties signed a coalition agreement stating, ‘Greenland belongs to us.’ This move was seen as a direct rebuke to the Trump administration’s public campaign to gain control of the territory.

Denmark’s Stance

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen accused the US of applying ‘unacceptable pressure’ on Greenland and Denmark. She vowed to resist such demands, emphasizing Greenland’s status as a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen also criticized the tone of Vance’s remarks, calling for cooperation rather than confrontation.

Strategic Importance of Greenland

Greenland’s strategic location and untapped mineral resources have made it a focal point of geopolitical interest. President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that the US needs Greenland for ‘world peace’ and ‘national security.’ Vance echoed this sentiment, highlighting the region’s importance in countering Chinese and Russian influence in the Arctic.

The visit underscores the growing tensions between the US, Greenland, and Denmark over the Arctic territory. While the US seeks to expand its strategic footprint, Greenland and Denmark remain committed to preserving their sovereignty and partnership.
