CHIANG MAI (Azat TV) – Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has called for a fundamental shift in the cryptocurrency industry, urging developers to move beyond speculative memecoin trading and focus on building systems that serve society. The remarks come in the wake of significant losses experienced by investors in meme tokens, including the notable crash of Trumpcoin.
Crypto’s Purpose Beyond Speculation
Speaking with Michel Bauwens in Chiang Mai, Buterin articulated a vision for cryptocurrency that prioritizes utility and public good over financial speculation. He stated that the sector can no longer rely solely on hype and must establish a clearer public purpose. “Crypto can’t just exist as a tech flex anymore,” Buterin said. “It has to stand for something more concrete.” He emphasized that developers should first identify societal needs and then select the appropriate technological tools to address them, rather than starting with a platform and seeking applications.
Ethereum as a Public Infrastructure
Buterin described Ethereum not just as a trading platform but as a foundational infrastructure for shared digital tasks. He envisions it functioning as a “global shared memory” and a public bulletin board for verifiable records. This includes potential applications in voting systems, certificate revocation lists, and data storage for cryptographic protocols, services that require reliable shared storage but not necessarily complex financial logic. The decentralized and open nature of Ethereum, Buterin argued, makes it ideal for providing these censorship-resistant and accessible systems.
Addressing Spam and Enhancing Data Capacity
To ensure the accessibility and usability of these open systems, Buterin addressed the issue of spam and network abuse. He suggested that small Ether (ETH) payments can act as an economic deterrent against attackers flooding networks with spam, thereby maintaining open access without compromising security. Furthermore, he highlighted recent and upcoming upgrades to Ethereum, such as PeerDAS, which are designed to significantly expand the network’s data capacity. This increased capacity is crucial for public systems that rely on open records and broad accessibility, enabling more sophisticated non-financial services to be built on the blockchain.
The call from Vitalik Buterin signals a potential maturation of the cryptocurrency space, moving from a phase dominated by speculative assets to one focused on building tangible, socially beneficial applications.
