JOHANNESBURG (Azat TV) – Walmart officially opened its third South African store in Boksburg on February 28, 2026, marking a significant acceleration in the retail giant’s commitment to the nation and signaling a transformative impact on the local retail sector. This new opening at Eastpoint Shopping Centre is the first step in a proposed plan to launch an additional 21 stores across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape, intensifying competition and expanding access to its ‘Every Day Low Prices’ philosophy for South African consumers.
The strategic expansion highlights Walmart’s growing investment in the South African market, aiming to solidify its national presence and offer accessible, high-quality merchandise. The company’s entry into Boksburg follows successful launches in Clearwater and Fourways, where its pricing strategy has already garnered positive customer reception.
Walmart’s Accelerated Rollout Across Provinces
The opening of the Boksburg store is not an isolated event but rather the start of an aggressive rollout strategy. Walmart has announced plans for 21 additional stores in the pipeline, targeting key provinces such as Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape. This rapid expansion is set to significantly increase Walmart’s footprint, making its retail model more broadly available across the country and impacting various local economies.
André Steyn, Vice President of Format Acceleration for Walmart, emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering consistent value. He noted that since the Clearwater Mall opening, independent price comparisons have confirmed Walmart’s low-price advantage on essential goods, including bread, milk, eggs, rice, sunflower oil, and sugar. This consistent pricing strategy aims to build customer trust by eliminating the need to wait for promotions or worry about fluctuating prices.
Commitment to Every Day Low Prices
Walmart’s core business strategy in South Africa revolves around its ‘Every Day Low Prices’ model. This approach is designed to ensure that consumers consistently find the lowest total cost for their shopping trolley, without the variability often associated with promotional cycles. This strategy has been a key draw for customers in its existing Clearwater and Fourways locations, who have responded enthusiastically to the promise of affordability.
The new Boksburg store offers a comprehensive one-stop shopping experience, combining fresh food and groceries with a curated selection of family and home entertainment items. Popular customer picks, such as affordable roast chicken quarters, marbled sirloin steaks, and imported treats like Dr Pepper and Reese’s chocolate bars, will be available. Furthermore, based on customer feedback, Walmart has expanded its appliance offerings to include fridges, vacuum cleaners, and water dispensers, enhancing convenience for shoppers.
Boosting Local Economy and Suppliers
Beyond competitive pricing, Walmart’s expansion also includes a significant focus on local community support and engagement with small suppliers. The Boksburg store alone has created 80 new jobs, contributing directly to local employment. In line with its global commitment, Walmart is strengthening ties with local businesses, such as Ekurhuleni-based Ultra Chem, a household detergent manufacturer and participant in Walmart’s Supplier Growth Summit, which supplies the ECONO brand of cleaning products.
To mark the Boksburg opening and make an immediate community impact, Walmart donated over 1.5 tonnes of non-perishable groceries to FoodForward SA. This initiative supports food security efforts for families in the broader Ekurhuleni community, mirroring similar charitable contributions made during the openings of its Clearwater and Fourways stores.
Enhanced Convenience with Express Delivery
Walmart is also enhancing customer convenience through technology. Shoppers can download the Africa version of the Walmart shopping app, which facilitates a 60-minute express delivery service. Following positive feedback from first-time online customers, with 99% expressing an intention to place repeat orders, the company has extended its online delivery radius from 5km to 8km from its stores. This service covers fresh food, groceries, adult beverages, and small appliances, catering to the growing demand for rapid home delivery.
The East Point Shopping Centre store, managed by 22-year retail veteran Hector Msane, officially opened at 8:00 a.m. on February 28, 2026, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and family-friendly activities. The store operates from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays and public holidays.
Walmart’s aggressive expansion and sustained focus on competitive pricing and convenience are poised to reshape the South African retail landscape, potentially driving down costs for consumers while presenting new challenges and opportunities for existing local retailers and suppliers.
