The counting process in Milwaukee faced an unexpected delay early Wednesday morning. According to Milwaukee Election Commission Director Paulina Gutierrez, a technical error occurred when audit logs, rather than actual ballot results, were uploaded to flash drives used for reporting. This logistical setback, involving at least 28,000 ballots, has left both campaigns and voters in a state of high-stakes limbo.
The Weight of Institutional Intervention
The race has become a focal point for the broader ideological tensions within the Democratic Party. Outgoing Governor Tony Evers, who initially maintained neutrality, intervened in the final month of the campaign to endorse Crowley. Evers’ decision was driven by concerns that a Hong nomination could jeopardize the party’s prospects in the general election, potentially threatening the legacy of his eight-year tenure in the key battleground state.

Despite her strong grassroots following, Hong notably did not receive endorsements from national progressive figures such as Senator Bernie Sanders or Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, both of whom cited a strategic focus on federal races. Conversely, Crowley has secured support from party leadership, including Representative Gwen Moore, who has been a vocal presence at his campaign events.
As the count continues, the atmosphere remains tense. Hong briefly claimed a razor-thin lead as results from Dane County were reported, but the margin quickly shifted back to Crowley.
