Belfast Announces Further City Centre Road Closures Due to Fleadh Cheoil Crowds

Belfast City Council and festival organizers have implemented further road closures in Belfast city centre to manage the record-breaking attendance at the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann festival. The eight-day celebration of Irish music, which began on August 2, has already drawn over 300,000 visitors in its first two days, with total attendance expected to reach 800,000.

Effective from 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5, several key routes surrounding Belfast City Hall will be closed to all traffic until the festival concludes on Sunday evening. The affected roads include Wellington Place, Donegall Square North, Donegall Square East, and Donegall Square West. According to Trafficwatch NI, these measures are part of a phased plan to ensure pedestrian safety and facilitate movement in the city centre.

Public transport services operated by Translink are experiencing service diversions as a result of the closures. Passengers are advised that pick-up and drop-off points have been adjusted. While the lower end of Chichester Street and Donegall Square South remain open, public hire taxis have been redirected to alternative ranks at Upper Arthur Street and Chichester Street. Translink has increased capacity and frequency across its network to accommodate the surge in demand and encourages attendees to utilize the official Park & Ride sites.
