Quick Read

  • Yemen’s Houthi movement has threatened to blockade the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key maritime route.
  • The Houthis cited the ongoing conflict in Gaza as the primary motivation for their potential actions.
  • A blockade could significantly disrupt global trade and energy supplies, impacting the U.S. and Israel.

YEMEN (Azat TV) – Yemen’s Ansar Allah movement, commonly known as the Houthis, has indicated readiness to blockade the vital Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical chokepoint for global shipping, citing the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The threat, if enacted, could significantly impact maritime trade and energy supplies, particularly affecting the United States and Israel.

Bab el-Mandeb Strait: A Crucial Maritime Chokepoint

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, translating to the ‘Gate of Tears,’ is a narrow waterway approximately 32 kilometers wide that connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. It serves as a crucial gateway to the Suez Canal, through which a substantial portion of global seaborne trade passes. Before recent disruptions, an estimated 8.8 million barrels of oil daily, approximately 10% of global seaborne oil, transited through the strait. Additionally, it handled between 10% to 12% of global seaborne trade and about 8% of the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade.

Houthi Motivation and Past Actions

The Houthi movement began targeting shipping in the Red Sea in late 2023, in response to what they termed the “Israeli genocide in Gaza.” These actions ceased following a ceasefire in October 2025. The current signaling of a potential blockade appears to be a renewed effort to exert pressure related to the persistent conflict in the region.

Potential Impact on U.S. and Israel

The Houthis have stated that the strait would be blocked only for “aggressor states” fighting against Palestine, Lebanon, Iran, and other members of the ‘Axis of Resistance.’ Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, a spokesperson for Ansar Allah, told Russian media that Yemen is considering all options to resist Israel and the U.S.

A blockade would pose significant challenges for U.S. naval operations. U.S. warships frequently use the Bab el-Mandeb en route to the Persian Gulf, and increased risks from attacks in the narrow waterway could complicate supply and maintenance operations. Avoiding the strait would force vessels on longer, more circuitous routes, impacting logistical efficiency.

Furthermore, engaging in direct conflict with the Houthis could deplete U.S. and Israeli air defense systems and offensive munitions. The U.S. could find itself facing a multi-front conflict, while Israel might be stretched by potential attacks from Iran, Hezbollah, and the Houthis simultaneously. The global economic fallout from such disruptions is anticipated to drive up energy prices, affecting consumers worldwide.

Regional Escalation Concerns

Al-Bukhaiti warned that if the conflict escalates, it could engulf the region, potentially involving ground fighting that spreads to Israel and Palestine, a scenario he referenced as foretold in Quranic verses. The threat underscores the volatile geopolitical situation in the Middle East, where regional actors continue to leverage maritime routes as leverage in broader political and military disputes.

The Houthi movement’s threat to blockade the Bab el-Mandeb Strait highlights the interconnectedness of regional conflicts and global trade, demonstrating how localized disputes can have far-reaching economic and strategic implications.
