  • Zootopia 3 is officially in development at Walt Disney Animation Studios.
  • The sequel follows Zootopia 2, which grossed .87 billion worldwide.
  • Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan are confirmed to return.
  • A release date is not set, with studio leadership suggesting a 2030-2031 window.

Walt Disney Animation Studios officially announced the development of Zootopia 3 during the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim on Friday. The announcement comes as a direct follow-up to the record-breaking performance of Zootopia 2, which earned $1.87 billion globally, positioning it as the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time.

Disney Animation chief Jared Bush revealed the project alongside cast members Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan. The studio confirmed that Goodwin will return as Judy Hopps, and Quan will reprise his role as Gary De’Snake, a character introduced in the second installment. While Jason Bateman’s return as Nick Wilde has not been officially confirmed by the studio, industry expectations remain high for the inclusion of the fan-favorite character.

The studio provided a cryptic teaser, stating, “The world of Zootopia is about to go to the birds.” This hint aligns with the post-credits scene of Zootopia 2, which featured a feather landing on Judy Hopps’ windowsill, signaling the narrative shift for the next chapter. While no official release date has been set, Bush noted that animated features typically require a four-to-five-year production timeline, suggesting a potential theatrical window between 2030 and 2031.
