The 2026 White Marlin Open in Ocean City, Maryland, reached a critical juncture on Wednesday as Day 3 brought a significant influx of activity to the Harbour Island Marina scales. With 277 boats registered to fish, the tournament saw its highest participation level of the week, leading to the long-awaited arrival of the event’s first qualifying billfish.
First Qualifying Billfish Landed
The leaderboard saw immediate movement as soon as the scales opened at 4:00 p.m. The MaxBet crew arrived with the tournament’s first qualifying blue marlin. Caught by Kelly Weber, the fish met the 114-inch minimum length requirement and tipped the scales at 607.5 pounds, establishing the first benchmark for the blue marlin category.
Shortly thereafter, the white marlin category finally saw a qualifier. After an earlier boat, Risky Business, narrowly missed the cut with a 69.5-inch catch, the Bull Pen team secured the lead. Angler James Hood brought in a white marlin that met the 70-inch length requirement and weighed exactly 70 pounds, successfully securing the top spot on the leaderboard.
Leaderboard Stakes and Participation
These catches add a layer of urgency to the remainder of the week. With significant prize money on the line—highlighted by a $2.43 million bigeye tuna caught earlier in the week by the See Legs team—the pressure on the remaining fleet is mounting. As of Wednesday evening, the white marlin, blue marlin, swordfish, and wahoo categories remain open for new entries, with four days of competition still ahead.
Tournament organizers have noted that the increased boat participation on Day 3 has directly correlated with the increased success at the scales. With favorable conditions and a large fleet actively searching the waters off the Maryland coast, officials anticipate that the coming days will likely result in further leaderboard shifts as teams push to claim their share of the multi-million dollar purse.
