A Double Expansion for ABC’s Flagship Drama

ABC has officially confirmed a significant expansion of its police procedural franchise, announcing the renewal of The Rookie for a ninth season alongside the series order for a brand-new spinoff titled The Rookie: North. Both projects are currently slated for the network’s 2027 midseason schedule, signaling a major commitment to the universe established by showrunner Alexi Hawley.

The original series, which stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, has evolved from a premise centered on a life-altering career change into a long-running ensemble drama. Season 9 arrives with high stakes, as the eighth season concluded on a cliffhanger involving the abduction of Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen. Showrunners are expected to address the immediate aftermath of this event rather than opting for a narrative reset.

The Rookie: North and the Pacific Northwest Setting

The spinoff, The Rookie: North, shifts the action from the dense urban environment of Los Angeles to the Pacific Northwest. The series stars Jay Ellis as Alex Holland, a character who enters the Pierce County Police Department as its oldest rookie following a violent home invasion. This thematic choice mirrors the original show’s core appeal—an older individual navigating a career transition into law enforcement.

The production, a collaboration between Lionsgate Television and 20th Television, intends to contrast the original series by incorporating both coastal city life and isolated forest communities. The cast will feature Janet Montgomery, Karen Fukuhara, Chris Sullivan, Froy Gutierrez, Mya Lowe, and Malik Watson.

Interconnected Storytelling

ABC is actively bridging the two series to ensure continuity. Nathan Fillion is expected to appear in the premiere of The Rookie: North, with showrunner Alexi Hawley describing a mentorship dynamic between Nolan and Holland. This connection is designed to facilitate potential crossover events, effectively linking the Los Angeles and Pacific Northwest settings.

This move follows the network’s previous attempt at franchise expansion with The Rookie: Feds, which concluded after one season. The decision to proceed with North indicates strong confidence from ABC, as the flagship series remains a top performer, ranking fourth among the network’s programs in the 2025–26 multiplatform season for the 18–49 demographic.
