Strategic Appointments to Strengthen Development
Kerry GAA has confirmed significant additions to its underage football management structures for the 2027 season, following a County Board meeting held on August 25, 2026. The appointments, which include two of the most decorated figures in the county’s sporting history, reflect a concerted effort to elevate coaching standards across the minor and Under-20 levels.
Maurice Fitzgerald, a legendary figure in Kerry football and a former senior selector, has been named as a coach and selector for the minor management team led by Marc Ó Sé. This move is widely viewed as a major boost for the minor squad, which experienced a challenging 2026 campaign. Fitzgerald, who currently serves as the principal of Coláiste na Sceilge in Caherciveen, brings a wealth of experience, having previously served on the senior management teams of Eamonn Fitzmaurice and Peter Keane.
Simultaneously, the Under-20 management team, led by manager Tomás Ó Sé, has been bolstered by the formal addition of his brother, Darragh Ó Sé, as a fourth selector. Tomás Ó Sé, who is entering the final year of his two-year term, will be working with a selection panel that already includes Mark Fitzgerald, Maurice Horan, and Mike Frank Russell.
Broader Management Landscape
While these underage appointments have been finalized, the senior team management landscape remains in a state of transition. Manager Jack O’Connor is set to enter the final year of his two-year term without his former coach, Cian O’Neill. While official confirmation is pending, it is understood that Kieran Donaghy may be drafted to assist in filling the void left by O’Neill’s departure.
The senior backroom team will see further adjustments, notably with Shane O’Rourke taking on sole responsibility for strength and conditioning for the senior squad. O’Rourke, a lecturer in Health, Sport and Exercise Sciences at MTU, brings extensive experience from his previous work with the Kerry minor footballers, senior hurlers, and the Clare senior footballers.
Focus on Future Development
The decision to bring figures like Maurice Fitzgerald into the minor set-up is a clear signal of the County Board’s intent to revitalize the development pipeline. Following a disappointing loss to Cork in the 2026 minor championship, the return of a figure of Fitzgerald’s stature is expected to provide stability and tactical mentorship for younger players. The minor backroom team will continue to feature selectors Ronan McAuliffe, Noel Kennelly, and Cathal Moriarty, with the potential for a fifth selector to be added as the season approaches.
Meanwhile, the hurling department remains focused on continuity, with manager John Tweek Griffin retained for another year. The board is currently seeking a new coach for the hurling squad following the departure of Shane Brick.
