Election Result and Margins

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially declared Ademola Adeleke, the incumbent Governor of Osun State, the winner of the 2026 governorship election. Adeleke, representing the Accord Party, secured his second term by polling 511,067 votes, successfully defending his seat against his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The final tally shows a margin of 66,215 votes, with Oyebamiji securing 444,815 votes. Other candidates trailed significantly, with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Folasayo Salaam, receiving 17,180 votes, and the African Action Congress (AAC) recording 1,458 votes. According to INEC data, out of 2,339,544 registered voters, 1,010,684 were accredited for the exercise.

Historical Significance

Adeleke’s victory marks a notable milestone in Osun State’s political history, as he becomes only the third governor to win a second term through an election. He joins the ranks of former governors Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Rauf Aregbesola. The path to this second term, however, reflects the volatile nature of state politics; for instance, Oyinlola’s tenure was previously cut short by a court-ordered nullification, while Aregbesola served two full terms.

Campaign Dynamics and Challenges

The re-election bid was defined by a highly competitive environment. Adeleke faced not only a robust challenge from the APC but also internal divisions within his own political camp that threatened to complicate his path to victory. Despite these obstacles, the governor maintained his electoral base, relying heavily on his administration’s infrastructure projects and his direct, visible engagement with local communities.

The result suggests that the electorate largely viewed the election as a referendum on Adeleke’s previous term. While the opposition APC mounted a well-organized campaign, the incumbent’s ability to mobilize support proved decisive. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), led by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has congratulated Adeleke, noting that the high voter turnout underscores the resilience of the democratic process in the country.

Looking Ahead

With the electoral victory secured, the focus for the Adeleke administration now shifts toward the governance challenges of the next four years. While the results have been declared, the political climate remains watchful to see whether the opposition will formally challenge the outcome in the courts or accept the results. For Adeleke, the immediate priority is to consolidate his mandate and deliver on the campaign promises that formed the core of his re-election platform.
