Security Crackdown and Political Violence
As Osun State approaches its governorship election scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026, the political landscape has been marred by a series of security incidents and escalating rhetoric. On Thursday, August 13, Nigerian Navy personnel apprehended Babatunde Komolafe Festus, an All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Assembly candidate for Atakumosa East/West, in the town of Ifewara. Sources report that the arrest occurred during a routine vehicle search, which allegedly uncovered a firearm inside a campaign vehicle associated with the APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji.
This incident is part of a broader trend of instability. The APC has formally alleged that Dele Ayegbo, the nephew of its campaign Director-General Wole Oke, was shot dead on Wednesday night in Esa-Oke, Obokun Local Government Area. The party spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, attributed the killing to suspected political thugs linked to the Accord Party, though the Osun State Police Command has yet to confirm details of the investigation despite requests for comment.
Escalating Rhetoric and Legal Disputes
The security situation is compounded by incendiary political discourse. Mutali Adisa, an APC chieftain and the Seriki of Ikire, recently issued a warning to residents, stating that those who do not support the party’s candidate should not attempt to “cross a gutter” in Ikire on election day. This statement has drawn widespread condemnation and heightened fears of voter intimidation.
Legal actions are also intensifying. The Accord Party in Ilesa East has filed a criminal complaint against Senator Francis Fadahunsi, accusing him of uttering seditious words that incite disaffection among the population. The complaint, filed by A. A. Ahmed, Esq, alleges that the senator’s remarks have promoted hostility between segments of the Osun electorate.
Shifting Alliances
Amidst the volatility, the Accord Party has undergone a significant shift in its electoral stance. On Thursday, National Chairman Imumolen announced the party’s withdrawal of support for incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, opting instead to endorse the APC’s Bola Oyebamiji. The decision followed the cancellation of an Accord Party mega rally due to internal crises. The endorsement, delivered at an APC rally in Osogbo, signals a consolidation of political forces ahead of the weekend poll, though it remains unclear how this shift will impact the ground-level mobilization in a state already on edge.
