Alex Eala has cemented her place in tennis history, becoming the first Filipino player to reach the Round of 16 at a Grand Slam tournament. The 21-year-old secured her spot at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club following a hard-fought victory over reigning Wimbledon champion and world No. 3 Iga Swiatek, ending the match 7-6 (11-9), 6-2.
This historic performance has propelled Eala to a career-high No. 28 in the WTA live rankings. According to reports from the All England Club, the victory has triggered widespread international attention, with social media engagement surrounding her run reaching record levels. The win also guarantees Eala a prize of at least £300,000.
Eala now faces a significant challenge in her quest for a quarterfinal berth: an upcoming match against Italian Olympic gold medalist Jasmine Paolini. The two have met previously, with Eala securing a victory at the Dubai Tennis Championships earlier this year. Paolini, a finalist at both Wimbledon and the French Open in 2024, acknowledged the difficulty of the upcoming fixture, noting that Eala’s playing style is particularly well-suited to grass surfaces.
Reflecting on her journey, Eala remains focused on the task ahead. “Just because I’m emotional doesn’t mean I’m satisfied,” she stated following the win against Swiatek. The winner of the Eala-Paolini match will advance to the quarterfinals to face either Marta Kostyuk or Ashlyn Krueger.
