Festival Expansion and New Infrastructure
The 2026 Galway Summer Racing Festival, a cornerstone of the Irish sporting calendar, has officially commenced at Ballybrit. Running from Monday, July 27, to Sunday, August 2, the festival features 54 scheduled contests. Organizers have introduced a significant operational change for the second day of the event: Tuesday, July 28, will now feature an eight-race card, marking an expansion aimed at providing greater value to attendees.
Michael Moloney, CEO of Galway Racecourse since 2015, confirmed the addition of a new steeplechase to the Tuesday schedule. This decision aligns with a broader trend of growth for the event, with ticket and hospitality sales reportedly up 36% compared to previous cycles. The racecourse expects to welcome at least 130,000 visitors throughout the seven-day meeting.
Enhanced Fan Experience: Tote 26
Alongside the race card expansion, the track has unveiled “Tote 26,” a dedicated festival venue designed to improve the Raceday experience for both on-track and off-track patrons. According to Moloney, the facility is intended to provide a specialized area for racegoers to follow live action and engage in the festival atmosphere. The investment in this venue is part of a multi-year strategy to modernize amenities at the Ballybrit venue.
Lynda Reilly, General Manager of Tote Ireland, noted that the launch of Tote 26 complements their long-standing sponsorship of the Galway Plate—the festival’s most prestigious handicap race. Tote has also maintained its support for the stable staff canteen, a move that stakeholders describe as critical for maintaining high standards of equine welfare and supporting the workforce behind the scenes.
Key Racing Highlights
The festival continues to blend Jump and Flat racing codes, attracting a diverse range of trainers. The Galway Plate, scheduled for Wednesday, July 29, remains the week’s focal point. Last year, the Gordon Elliott-trained Western Fold secured the victory in this extended 2m6f handicap, and the 2026 iteration is expected to maintain its status as one of the most competitive handicap pots in the sport. Other key fixtures include the Guinness Galway Hurdle on Thursday, July 30, and the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Ahonoora Handicap on the final day, Sunday, August 2.
