Defense manufacturer Anduril Industries is launching a $3.7 billion private capital project to build a software-defined shipyard at Tradepoint Atlantic in Baltimore County, marking the largest single private investment and job creator in Maryland in over a decade. The facility is designed to expand America’s submarine industrial base while reviving the historic naval shipbuilding legacy at Sparrows Point, a location where Bethlehem Steel previously manufactured vessels during both World Wars. According to state announcements, the project is projected to generate over $2 billion in annual economic output, accompanied by an estimated $312 million in wages each year.
Economic Scope and Job Creation
The initiative will support more than 14,000 total jobs across the region, with Anduril directly creating over 3,100 high-skilled maritime manufacturing positions in Maryland. Maryland Gov. Moore emphasized that the investment offers new pathways to workforce development and wealth generation through advanced training programs. The historic site has a deep maritime background dating back to the late 1700s, when Fells Point shipyards constructed Baltimore Clippers, and expanding through its role as a leading Liberty ship producer in the 1940s. Today’s project shifts that manufacturing foundation toward modern advanced maintenance and autonomous vessel engineering.
