Law enforcement officials in Ohio arrested 38-year-old Patrick Havas on Sunday after he allegedly charged at Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton during a campaign appearance at the Canfield Fair. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the suspect forced his way through the crowd while moving toward Acton, resulting in injuries to several attendees. The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that Havas was carrying two pistols and a taser at the time of his apprehension.
The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that while two handguns and a set of brass knuckles were recovered from the suspect, the weapons remained holstered throughout the encounter. Despite the chaotic nature of the incident, Acton was not physically injured. Her campaign team noted that the suspect knocked over individuals using mobility scooters during his advance.

Following the incident, Acton addressed the situation during a campaign stop on Monday, stating, “I am a fierce warrior in this fight; that’s exactly why I’m running.” She expressed gratitude toward first responders for their intervention. Her communications director, Addie Bullock, stated that the campaign “will always stand up to the chaos, hate and vitriol that pits us against one another,” as reported by the Associated Press.
Republican Governor Mike DeWine condemned the act, emphasizing that violence or the threat of it has no place in public discourse. Acton’s opponent in the gubernatorial race, Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, similarly denounced the behavior, stating through his communications director, Connie Luck, that candidates should be able to engage with voters without fear of violence. Ohio Republican Senator Jon Husted also voiced his condemnation on social media, praising law enforcement for their rapid response.
