While global M2 money supply has hovered near record highs, its growth rate has decelerated into negative territory, leaving system-wide liquidity highly constrained. Lepard contrasts Bitcoin’s high-beta sensitivity to these immediate liquidity shifts with the behavior of physical gold, which he characterizes as “pure debasement insurance” favored by market participants who inherently take a multi-decade view.

The M2 Decoupling and the Short-Term Liquidity Sensor

For years, the foundational investment thesis for Bitcoin rested on its correlation with global M2 money supply growth. The assumption was straightforward: as central banks print more fiat currency, a portion of that capital naturally flows into fixed-supply digital assets, driving up their price. However, recent market dynamics have challenged this lockstep relationship. Even as global M2 remained flat near historic peaks, Bitcoin experienced periods of pronounced weakness and volatility, decoupling from the broader monetary base.

To put a $15 trillion expansion into perspective, Thielen points out that this sum represents approximately one-fifth of the entire U.S. stock market, which is valued at roughly $75 trillion. The probability of global allocators shifting that volume of capital out of traditional equities, real estate, and debt instruments and directly into Bitcoin within a four-year window is exceedingly low, especially in an environment characterized by restrictive monetary policy and tight system-wide liquidity.

However, proponents of the hyper-bullish thesis argue that Thielen’s critique overlooks a fundamental mechanism of asset pricing: the money multiplier. If we apply a mid-range multiplier of 25, the actual capital inflow required to push Bitcoin to $1 million per coin drops from $15 trillion to approximately $740 billion. While $740 billion is a far more achievable figure than $15 trillion, it still represents an immense hurdle. For context, through December 2025, U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded approximately $58 billion in cumulative net inflows, translating to an annualized pace of roughly $30.2 billion.
