EUGENE, Ore. — Brandon Miller secured a hard-fought victory in the 800-meter race at the Prefontaine Classic on Friday night, surging past 17-year-old phenom Cooper Lutkenhaus in the final meters at Hayward Field. Miller, 24, clocked a winning time of 1 minute, 43.68 seconds, narrowly holding off the teenage challenger.

“He’s an amazing competitor. Everything he does, it makes me so excited because it pushes me to be better,” Miller said in his post-race interview on the Peacock broadcast. “At the end of the day, I’m out here competing with the best and he’s one of them.”

The race was the highlight of a series of tight finishes at the iconic Oregon venue. Other notable results included Wilma Nielsen edging Juliette Whittaker by 0.18 seconds to win the 1,500 meters, while Liam Murphy secured the men’s mile victory with a 0.01-second margin over Stefan Nillessen. In field events, Olympic champions Valarie Sion and Ethan Katzberg claimed titles in the women’s discus and men’s hammer throw, respectively.

The Prefontaine Classic continues this weekend with high-stakes showdowns expected in the 100-meter sprints. The field is set to include world champions Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, Sha’Carri Richardson, and Oblique Seville, as well as several Paris Games gold medalists, including Cole Hocker and Faith Kipyegon. The event serves as a critical marker for athlete momentum midway through the 2026 season.
