U.S. Capitol Police arrested Air Force Major Jason Watson on Wednesday after he conducted a protest in uniform on the House steps, publicly calling for the impeachment and removal of President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. Watson, an active-duty officer, was participating in an event organized by the Removal Coalition.
According to Capitol Police, Watson was initially escorted to the House steps by a member of Congress. When the lawmaker departed, officers issued lawful orders for the demonstration to cease, citing regulations that prohibit public protests on the House steps without the presence of a member of Congress. Watson refused the orders and was subsequently taken into custody on charges of “Crowding, Obstructing, and Incommoding.”
During his remarks, Watson criticized the administration’s foreign policy regarding Venezuela and Iran, as well as its immigration tactics, labeling them unconstitutional. He argued that the administration had violated the War Powers Clause, resulting in military casualties.
The arrest highlights significant legal stakes for the officer. Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), service members are prohibited from engaging in political activities while in uniform and are restricted from using contemptuous language toward the President and other senior officials. An Air Force spokesperson stated that all personnel are expected to uphold standards of discipline and professionalism both on and off duty. Watson is currently being held at an Air Force base, with further disciplinary proceedings expected.
