Burnley Football Club has officially appointed Belgian manager Nicky Hayen as its new head coach, securing the 45-year-old on a three-year contract. The appointment, confirmed on July 10, 2026, concludes a search for a permanent successor to Scott Parker, who departed by mutual consent in April following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.
A New Direction for the Clarets
Hayen arrives at Turf Moor from Belgian Pro League side KRC Genk, where he oversaw a seventh-place finish last season. His appointment follows failed negotiations for other candidates, including Wales manager Craig Bellamy. The club’s board, led by chairman Alan Pace, views this as a strategic move to establish a long-term footballing identity.
“In Nicky, we have a coach who builds teams with a clear identity and improves the players around him,” Pace stated. “This is a considered appointment that fits how we intend to run the club. We have backed a clear footballing plan within a sustainable model.”
Background and Expectations
Hayen is no stranger to the British game, having spent time managing Haverfordwest County in the Welsh Premier League during the 2021-22 season. His tactical experience in Belgium, which includes a league title with Club Brugge in 2024, is expected to provide the necessary stability for a Burnley side that has frequently fluctuated between tiers in recent seasons.
The new head coach will join the squad immediately for their pre-season tour in the United States. His competitive debut is scheduled for August 8, 2026, in a Carabao Cup tie against Notts County, followed by the Championship opener against West Ham United.
