A New Chapter for the Wolverines

The University of Michigan has officially named Mike Boynton Jr. as the head coach of its men’s basketball program. The announcement, made Friday by Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics Warde Manuel, confirms that Boynton has signed a two-year contract to lead the team following the departure of former head coach Dusty May to the Dallas Mavericks.

Boynton, who served as an assistant and defensive coordinator under May for the past two seasons, steps into the role with high expectations. During his tenure as defensive coordinator, Michigan’s defensive efficiency saw a significant rise, culminating in the program’s first NCAA national championship in 37 years during the 2025-26 season. The Wolverines finished that campaign with a school-record 37-3 mark and a Big Ten regular-season title.

Continuity and Leadership

Athletic Director Warde Manuel emphasized that Boynton’s familiarity with the program was a deciding factor. “Mike is a veteran assistant with strong head coaching experience and a clear understanding of the standard we expect at Michigan,” Manuel said. “He has been an invaluable member of our staff, bringing stability and leadership during an important period of success.”

Before arriving in Ann Arbor in 2024, Boynton spent seven seasons as the head coach at Oklahoma State, where he compiled a 119-109 record and mentored notable NBA talent, including Cade Cunningham. His reputation as a premier player-development coach is backed by his recent work at Michigan, where he helped guide four players to first-round NBA Draft selections over the last two cycles.

Strategic Outlook

The two-year contract signals a period of evaluation and stabilization for the program. Boynton expressed gratitude for the opportunity, noting his commitment to the “championship culture” already established. His primary challenge will be maintaining roster cohesion and recruiting momentum as the program transitions from the May era. With a proven track record in both defensive strategy and player development, Boynton is tasked with ensuring that Michigan remains a top-tier contender in the Big Ten and on the national stage.
