Mark Carney, the Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, issued a statement commemorating the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, marked on April 24. In his statement, published on April 26, he joined “tens of thousands of Canadian Armenians and millions around the world” in remembrance.
Commemorating the Genocide
In his statement, Carney remembered the 1.5 million Armenian victims who he stated “fell victim to these senseless atrocities systematically planned and carried out by the Ottoman Empire.” He also stated his thoughts were with the survivors who showed “courage and perseverance” to overcome incredible hardships and rebuild their lives, communities, and institutions.
Addressing Denial and Recent Events
Carney highlighted that, 110 years later, this genocide “is still actively denied by its perpetrators.” He stated that the Armenian people continue to face “persecution and pressure.” As a “tragic example” of this, he cited the forced displacement of over 120,000 indigenous Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023. According to his statement, this displacement occurred after months of an “illegal blockade” that deprived them of basic human rights. Commitment to Tolerance
Marking the day, Carney stated, “we remember those who perished and commit ourselves to building a stronger, more tolerant Canada, free from discrimination and hate.”
