Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has publicly questioned the completeness of Terence Crawford’s legacy following their high-profile clash last September. In an interview with Ring Magazine, the Mexican superstar stated that for Crawford to receive the full credit he deserves, a rematch between the two was essential.
Crawford, who moved up two weight divisions to secure a unanimous decision victory at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, chose to retire and vacate his super-middleweight titles immediately following the win. Canelo, who held the undisputed crown prior to that defeat, expressed lingering frustration regarding the lack of a second encounter.
“I always give him credit, but we need to run it back,” Alvarez told Ring Magazine. “After the fight, I said we need to run back this fight because I don’t feel I really won, and I need to make this fight happen again. If the rematch happens, it’s going to be different. For him to deserve all the credit, he needs to give me the rematch. But he decided to retire, and we need to accept that and move forward.”
While Canelo maintains that a second fight would produce a different outcome, Crawford has remained steadfast in his decision to leave the sport at the peak of his career. With a return to the ring for the American appearing highly unlikely, Alvarez has shifted his focus to his upcoming October bout against WBC super-middleweight champion Christian Mbilli.
