Carolina Wilga, a 26-year-old German backpacker, has been found alive after spending 12 harrowing days lost in the remote Australian outback. The Western Australia (WA) Police Force confirmed her rescue on July 11, 2025, bringing relief to her family and those involved in the extensive search efforts.
Discovery Near Karroun Hill Nature Reserve
Ms. Wilga was discovered near the edge of the Karroun Hill Nature Reserve, a rugged and sparsely populated area in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. A member of the public found her walking along a bush track on Friday, July 11. Her condition was described as fragile, with significant mosquito bites and minor injuries, but she was otherwise safe. She had not been seen since June 29 when she was last spotted at a store in the town of Beacon, about 200 miles east of Perth.
According to UPI, Wilga’s vehicle, a Mitsubishi Delica Star Wagon, was found abandoned on July 10, approximately 22 miles from the main trail of the reserve. Police believe the vehicle suffered mechanical issues, leaving her stranded in the remote bushland. Overnight temperatures in the area had reportedly dipped below freezing, compounding the challenges she faced during her ordeal.
The Ordeal in the Outback
For nearly two weeks, Wilga had to endure the harsh realities of the Australian outback, including freezing nights, limited food and water, and an onslaught of mosquito bites. WA Police Acting Inspector Jessica Securo described the terrain as “outback country” with rocky outcrops and multiple trails, making it easy to become disoriented. “If you didn’t know the area well, it would be incredibly challenging to navigate,” she told the media.
Inspector Martin Glynn, speaking to ABC News, emphasized the trauma she had endured. “This has been an incredible journey of survival, demonstrating her bravery and resilience,” he said. Glynn added that Wilga’s family had been notified of her rescue, and she was airlifted to a hospital in Perth for further medical attention.

Wilga’s rescue was made possible through the combined efforts of the local community, search teams, and the individual who found her. WA Police expressed gratitude to everyone who provided information and assistance during the search. “This is a great outcome for all those involved,” Glynn remarked.
