Quick Read

  • The Odyssey is shot entirely with IMAX cameras, a first for a feature film.
  • A custom soundproof 'blimp' was created to reduce camera noise during intimate scenes.
  • Nolan used a mirror system to maintain actors' eye contact while cameras were in place.
  • The film, starring Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, hits theaters on July 17.

A Mythic London Gathering

The star-studded cast of Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey convened at IET Savoy Place in London this weekend. Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, and Lupita Nyong’o were among the ensemble attending the official photocall on July 5, 2026, as momentum builds toward the film’s global theatrical release on July 17.

The production, which also features Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Benny Safdie, represents one of the most ambitious technical undertakings in Nolan’s career. According to reports from the Motion Picture Association, the film was shot entirely using IMAX cameras, a feat that required significant logistical innovation.

Technical Innovation Behind the Lens

Filming an entire feature in IMAX presented a unique challenge for Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema. Due to the massive size and mechanical noise of IMAX cameras, the team struggled to maintain intimate, quiet dialogue scenes. To resolve this, the crew utilized a specialized soundproof housing—a “blimp”—to dampen the camera’s noise.

The size of this housing, however, created a new hurdle: it prevented actors from maintaining direct eye contact. Nolan solved this by implementing a mirror system, allowing actors like Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway to look at reflections that aligned with their co-stars’ eyelines. Damon noted that the workaround was so effective that he often forgot he was looking at a mirror, allowing him to remain fully immersed in his performance.

The film is set to open in theaters on July 17, with audiences eager to see how these technical breakthroughs translate to the screen in this retelling of the classic epic.
