Strategic roster moves

The Colorado Avalanche announced on Monday that they have signed forward Fabian Lysell to a one-year contract valued at $850,000 for the 2026-27 season. Lysell, 23, was acquired by the Avalanche on June 27 in a player-for-player trade with the Boston Bruins, which saw Ivan Ivan head to Boston.

Lysell, a former 21st overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, spent the 2025-26 season with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Providence Bruins. During that campaign, he recorded 42 points—17 goals and 25 assists—across 57 regular-season games. Despite his pedigree as a first-round selection, Lysell has struggled to secure a permanent NHL role, having appeared in only 12 games at the major league level.

Offseason overhaul

This signing is the latest in a series of aggressive moves by the Avalanche front office to inject youth into an aging lineup following their Western Conference Final exit against the Vegas Golden Knights. The team has prioritized acquiring younger forwards with high upside, including Fedor Svechkov and Zachary L’Heureux, both of whom were acquired in a trade with the Nashville Predators in late June.

The Avalanche are banking on this influx of young talent—which also includes T.J. Hughes and Gavin Brindley—to provide more depth and energy. Lysell, a Gothenburg, Sweden native, brings a proven track record of production in the AHL, having accumulated 163 career points in 219 games, and the organization is hopeful that a change of scenery will facilitate his transition to a full-time NHL contributor.
