A familiar face returns to Hillsborough
Sheffield Wednesday have officially confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Joe Lumley on a permanent basis. The 31-year-old joins the club on a free transfer from Bristol City, marking his return to Hillsborough after a brief emergency loan spell during the 2025/26 campaign.
Lumley, who has penned a two-year deal, arrives as the club’s eighth signing of the summer. The move addresses a critical vacancy in the squad following the departure of Pierce Charles to Manchester City, which had left teenager Logan Stretch as the only remaining goalkeeper under manager Henrik Pedersen.
Leadership and Championship experience
Sporting director Simon Wilson highlighted Lumley’s past impact during his short stint at the club last season as a primary driver for the permanent move. “The group felt his leadership qualities last year and he will set high standards alongside the other senior members of the team,” Wilson stated. “His relationship with goalkeeping coach Darryl Flavahan is also excellent, and we believe he can settle quickly.”
Lumley himself expressed enthusiasm about the transition, noting that the atmosphere at Hillsborough was a decisive factor in his decision. “I jumped at the chance to come here. I was here last season and just got a feeling within that time of the set-up of the club, how big the club is, how passionate the fans are,” Lumley said. Having previously represented Middlesbrough, Doncaster Rovers, and Queens Park Rangers, the veteran keeper brings over 200 EFL appearances to the League One side.
The club is looking to build stability after a challenging period, with Lumley tasked with anchoring the defense as they aim to establish the stadium as a “fortress” for the upcoming season.
