Strategic Expansion in Texas
Delta Air Lines has announced a significant expansion of its operations at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), confirming the launch of its first long-haul international service from the city. Starting March 27, 2027, the carrier will operate daily nonstop flights to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) during the summer season.
Joe Esposito, Delta’s Chief Commercial Officer, described the route as a “defining milestone” for the company’s presence in Austin, which has become one of the airline’s key “focus cities.” The service will be operated using Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, featuring 29 Delta One suites and 28 Premium Select recliners, signaling the airline’s commitment to capturing high-value international travelers in the growing Texas market.
Operational Context and Market Positioning
The announcement arrives as Delta faces increased scrutiny regarding its operational reliability. Data from July 2026 revealed that Delta experienced a 3% cancellation rate—higher than several key competitors. Industry analysts note that while the airline is successfully pushing into premium international markets, including expanded services to Seattle and Tokyo, these growth ambitions place greater pressure on the carrier’s execution capabilities. The complexity of long-haul operations requires high levels of staffing and scheduling precision, which the company is currently working to stabilize following recent disruptions.
Despite these operational headwinds, Delta is doubling down on its infrastructure investments in Austin. The airport is slated for a major expansion that includes the addition of 15 new gates, and Delta’s new route will make it the only U.S. carrier providing nonstop service to Europe from the city, joining international partners like British Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa.

In addition to the Paris route, Delta is bolstering its domestic footprint at AUS. The airline will launch nonstop service to San Diego (SAN) on April 12, 2027, competing directly with Southwest and Alaska Airlines. Furthermore, Delta is increasing capacity on its San Jose (SJC) route, adding a second daily flight to meet rising demand. These additions reflect a broader strategy to leverage Austin’s rapid economic growth while balancing the need for long-term operational resilience.
