Tour in Jeopardy
British pop star Ed Sheeran is facing the most significant crisis of his career as his US tour teeters on the brink of cancellation. The turmoil follows the removal of supporting act Macklemore from the tour, a decision allegedly driven by pressure from New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft. According to Middle East Eye, Macklemore claimed that Kraft, an outspoken supporter of Israel, issued an ultimatum to stadium owners: if Macklemore remained on the tour, Sheeran would be barred from performing in their venues.
The situation escalated rapidly as Sheeran’s entire support roster, including his backing band, withdrew from the tour in solidarity with the Palestinian people. Among those who departed are Grammy-winning musician Finneas, Irish singer-songwriter Aaron Rowe, and the folk group Beoga, as reported by Novara Media.
Polarized Reactions
The controversy has drawn in a wide array of public figures, resulting in a stark cultural divide. While Sheeran has received criticism from figures such as Paloma Faith, Ms Rachel, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Bernie Sanders for his handling of the situation, he has found unlikely support from the far-right activist Tommy Robinson. Robinson took to social media to declare his support for the singer, using the platform to mock critics of the tour’s management.
Conversely, singer Boy George has publicly defended Sheeran, condemning Macklemore for his vocal stance on the conflict in Gaza. British Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy also weighed in, expressing sympathy for the singer and stating her hope that the ongoing row would not irreparably damage the tour.
Financial and Political Fallout
In response to his removal, Macklemore announced he would donate his $1 million earnings from the tour to six Palestinian relief organizations, including UNRWA USA and the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. He subsequently challenged Robert Kraft to match the donation. Sheeran, in an attempt to address the humanitarian crisis, pledged $2 million to aid efforts, though he remained vague regarding the specific beneficiaries. Kraft has since stated he will match Sheeran’s donation, though he has not yet identified the recipient organizations.
The conflict was originally ignited by Macklemore’s track “Hind’s Hall,” which criticizes the Israeli military action in Gaza. Macklemore’s stage performances, which included calls to “Free Palestine,” became the focal point for pro-Israel groups demanding his removal. Sheeran has maintained that the decision to drop the rapper was made by promoters, not himself, stating that he would not abandon his fans or his crew.
