Skubal, who is in his final year of team control, openly discussed his deep ties to Detroit, stating, “I would love to play my whole career in Detroit. Drawing on his own experience transitioning from 12 seasons with the Atlanta Braves to Los Angeles in 2022, Freeman emphasized that moving teams is a complex emotional process. “You’re not just gonna flip a switch and be, like, ‘Oh, I’m great,’” Freeman told reporters. He noted that players form deep bonds during years of minor league development and shared professional struggles, making it difficult to immediately sever those ties after a trade.
“You had 15-hour bus rides together. The organization invested in you. You invested in them. You can do everything you can to win a World Series, and it doesn’t happen, and then you get traded. So, you’re going to have emotions,” Freeman explained. By sharing his own journey, the veteran first baseman aimed to de-escalate the tension surrounding Skubal’s remarks.
The Road Ahead for Skubal
Skubal is preparing for his home debut at Dodger Stadium, a milestone he approaches with a focus on building relationships with his new fanbase. “I’m excited to get in front of our own fans and get to know them,” Skubal stated. “At the end of the day, I gotta do my job here. Shift the mentality to give everything that I got to this team and the city of Los Angeles.”
Freeman remains confident that the Los Angeles faithful will support Skubal, noting that the stadium is a “special place” where fans appreciate players who contribute to championship goals.
