Air Travel Costs Rise in October
Travelers booking flights for the first half of October 2026 will face higher ticket prices due to a mandatory increase in fuel surcharges. The Philippines’ Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) announced that the surcharge level will climb from Level 14 to Level 17, effective from October 1 to 15.
This adjustment translates to additional costs of P559 to P1,635 for domestic routes. International passengers will see even higher increases, ranging from P1,846.10 to P13,726.58, depending on the flight distance. Airlines are required to file applications to collect these fees, which are permitted as temporary measures to offset sudden spikes in jet fuel expenses.
Logistics and Industrial Impact
The trend is not limited to passenger aviation. Industrial firms are also adjusting their pricing models to account for the sustained run-up in diesel costs. Sylvamo, a major paper producer, announced a $1.00/Cwt fuel surcharge effective October 1, 2026. Analysts expect other mills and logistics providers to follow suit as transport costs remain volatile.
Geopolitical and Market Drivers
The current pressure on fuel prices is largely attributed to renewed tensions in the Middle East. Recent reports indicate that the instability has been exacerbated by the rejection of proposals to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. These geopolitical factors, combined with broader trade uncertainty, have pushed energy prices upward throughout 2026. While OPEC members are reportedly discussing modest production increases, the current output adjustments are significantly lower than previously anticipated by markets, keeping upward pressure on crude oil benchmarks.
