SYDNEY (Azat TV) – Celebrity chef George Calombaris has entered the South African jungle as an intruder on ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’, marking his most high-profile return to the public eye since his hospitality empire’s collapse. The controversial former MasterChef Australia judge, 47, has openly stated that his decision to join the reality television program is driven by a desire for redemption and an opportunity to finally tell his side of the story after years defined by scandal and public scrutiny.
Channel 10 confirmed that Calombaris would join the camp on Sunday night, bringing his culinary background to the wilderness alongside 12 existing contestants. His arrival follows a period of significant professional and personal challenges, which he now hopes to confront head-on, away from the pressures of courtrooms and corporate boardrooms.
A Public Figure’s Fall From Grace
Calombaris’s public image dramatically unravelled in 2019 when his MAdE Establishment Group was found to have underpaid over 500 staff members by approximately $7.8 million over six years. The company was subsequently ordered to repay the wages and fined an additional $200,000. This scandal led to widespread public backlash, with MasterChef viewers and Unions NSW calling for his removal from the popular Channel 10 show, ultimately ending his 12-season tenure alongside fellow judges Matt Preston and Gary Mehigan.
Reflecting on the period, Calombaris told The Daily Telegraph that being labelled a ‘thief’ was ‘the most hurtful part of what I went through,’ describing the accusation as deeply at odds with his personal values. Beyond the financial repercussions, this public perception became a significant burden.
Legal and Personal Challenges Mount
The wage scandal was not the only controversy that plagued the Melbourne-born chef. In 2017, Calombaris was involved in an altercation with a fan at an A-League grand final, which resulted in an assault conviction and a fine. These incidents contributed to his rapid transformation into one of the most divisive figures in Australian food culture.
The subsequent COVID-19 lockdowns further exacerbated his business woes, contributing to losses of around $3 million. In 2023, Calombaris spoke openly about hitting rock bottom, including a personal struggle with alcohol addiction that led to an intervention by his brother. These experiences, he said, provided a brutal personal toll, stating it was ‘horrendous and something I never want my worst enemy to go through.’
Seeking a New Chapter
Following the collapse of his Melbourne-based empire, Calombaris relocated his family to Sydney in 2023. There, he entered a high-profile business partnership with pub baron Jon Adgemis, becoming involved in several venues including Alpha, the Empire Hotel, and Hotel Diplomat. However, his final Sydney venue, Gazi Supper Club in Darlinghurst, closed its doors in December, and industry whispers suggest his Melbourne restaurant, The Hellenic House Project, may also be on the market.
Despite the continued professional setbacks, Calombaris insists he has gained perspective, noting that others face far worse circumstances than financial ruin. He maintains that his life is now ‘in a really good place’ and that his primary motivation for joining ‘I’m a Celebrity’ is less about winning viewers over and more about setting an example for his children.
Redemption in the Jungle
Stepping from the professional MasterChef kitchen into the rugged South African camp, Calombaris will face daily challenges with whatever mystery ingredients arrive, a stark contrast to his previous high-end culinary setups. This appearance is widely framed as a potential redemption opportunity, offering him a direct platform to confront the narrative that has defined his public life for the past half-decade.
Calombaris’s move to reality television highlights a growing trend among public figures who, after significant professional and reputational setbacks, leverage high-visibility platforms to reshape their public image and directly address past controversies.
