Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels reached the strategic island of Perim in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on Friday, according to four sources from the internationally recognized Yemeni government reported by Reuters. This maneuver marks a significant escalation in the ongoing regional conflict, as the group solidifies its control over a critical maritime choke point.
The advance followed the withdrawal of Saudi-backed government forces from Perim and the nearby mainland coastal town of Dhubab. The Houthi movement has also seized the Red Sea islands of Hanish and the coastal city of Mocha, effectively tightening their grip on the primary alternative route for global energy supplies following the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait serves as a vital corridor for global commerce. With the Strait of Hormuz largely inaccessible due to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States, Saudi Arabia has increasingly relied on the Red Sea route to divert its crude oil exports. The Houthi presence in these strategic areas gives their backer, Iran, significant leverage to disrupt global supply chains.
Preliminary ship-tracking data indicated that traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has dropped significantly, falling to seven vessels on Thursday compared to a 10-day average of 10. Consequently, global oil prices are trending toward the $100-per-barrel mark for the first time since mid-May. Satellite imagery also detected smoke near Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline, a critical infrastructure asset that Aramco uses to bypass the Gulf transit routes, though Saudi officials have not confirmed an incident.
Diplomatic and Military Standoff
The Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, stated on Telegram that maritime navigation remains safe for all vessels excluding Saudi-flagged ships, which remain subject to a blockade. Meanwhile, the Saudi-backed Yemeni government has vowed to deploy military assets to retake the lost positions, including the route leading to Mocha.
According to Reuters, the Houthi offensive was launched with direct guidance from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, who are reportedly seeking to open a new front in the shadow war with Washington. While Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has reportedly urged the U.S. to launch strikes against the Houthi positions, the Trump administration has signaled it does not intend to engage in direct military action at this time, focusing instead on supporting Riyadh’s defensive capabilities.
