A Message from Gander
Former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien delivered a pointed message to the United States during a ceremony in Gander, Newfoundland, marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, as reported by The Canadian Press. Addressing the crowd, Chrétien stated, “Yes, Canada is a generous, open country, and Canadians are tolerant and kind. But never mistake our generosity for weakness. Never, never mistake our tolerance for lack of determination. And never, never, mistake our kindness for softness.”
Chrétien, who served as prime minister during the 2001 attacks, reminded attendees that Canada triggered Article 5 of the NATO treaty in the immediate aftermath, declaring the strike on the U.S. to be an attack on all members. “Our closest friend was attacked. We said that was an attack on us too, and we fought back side by side,” he noted, according to CTV News.
The Significance of Gander
The choice of venue held deep symbolic weight. Gander became a global symbol of humanitarian aid 25 years ago when 38 planes carrying more than 6,500 passengers were grounded in the town following the closure of U.S. airspace. Residents of the small community transformed churches, community halls, and private homes into sanctuaries for the stranded travelers.
U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra also addressed the crowd, thanking the people of Gander for their enduring legacy of compassion. “When people in America hear the word Gander, our hearts soften, and we just quietly murmur another prayer,” Hoekstra said. “And once more, we say thank you.”
Current Geopolitical Strains
The anniversary comes at a difficult period for the bilateral relationship between Ottawa and Washington. Recent months have seen the imposition of sweeping tariffs by the U.S. administration on Canadian goods, which prompted retaliatory measures from the Canadian government. While local officials and dignitaries at the ceremony focused on historical bonds and human kindness, the underlying tension remained a backdrop to the proceedings.
Chrétien concluded his remarks by balancing the call for mutual respect with a commitment to the truth. “We embrace our friends, and we help them in their moment of need. But we bow to no one,” he said. “They will always show you the respect of telling you the truth. So, my friends, here is to truth, to respect, to friendship and to good neighbours: Vive les États-Unis, et vive le Canada.”
