IBM CEO Arvind Krishna has outlined a concrete timeline for the commercial viability of quantum computing, projecting that the technology will begin making a “measurable impact” on the company’s top and bottom lines by 2028 or 2029. This forward-looking roadmap, shared during a recent appearance on CNBC’s “Mad Money,” comes alongside a massive $10 billion five-year investment commitment and fresh technical milestones that suggest the industry is transitioning from speculative research to practical business applications.

Bridging Theory and Commercial Reality

For years, quantum computing has been viewed as a distant frontier, limited by high error rates and fragile hardware. However, IBM’s confidence has been bolstered by recent research conducted in partnership with quantum startup Algorithmiq. The two companies recently unveiled research demonstrating “quantum advantage”—the capability of a quantum computer to solve complex mathematical and physical problems more efficiently than the world’s most advanced classical supercomputers.

According to Krishna, IBM’s quantum systems have already successfully modeled and revealed previously unobserved material behaviors that conventional computing architectures were entirely unable to capture. These scientific discoveries are not merely academic; they have direct commercial applications. IBM expects these breakthroughs to eventually accelerate development in high-stakes fields such as next-generation battery technology, materials science, fusion energy, and biopharmaceutical drug discovery. “A quantum computer can do things better, faster, cheaper, in a way that normal classical computers cannot do at this time,” Krishna noted, highlighting the immediate value proposition for enterprise clients.

Capital Commitments and the Foundry Initiative

To secure its leadership position against rivals like Alphabet Inc. and Rigetti Computing, IBM is backing its technological roadmap with unprecedented financial capital. In June 2026, the company announced a massive commitment to invest more than $10 billion in quantum computing over the next five years. This capital injection is designed to accelerate both hardware scaling and the development of software tools, including the newly introduced IBM Quantum Nighthawk platform, which is engineered to monitor, verify, and debug workloads across hybrid quantum-classical environments.

A key pillar of this strategy is localizing hardware manufacturing. In May, IBM announced plans to construct a standalone quantum chip foundry. This facility is supported by a $1 billion commitment from the U.S. Department of Commerce through CHIPS and Science Act incentives, which IBM is matching with an additional $1 billion of its own capital. By securing domestic manufacturing capabilities, IBM aims to mitigate supply chain risks and establish a standardized, scalable pipeline for quantum processors.

Addressing Near-Term Market Volatility

The optimistic long-term projections contrast with recent short-term turbulence in IBM’s stock price. On July 14, IBM experienced its worst single-day stock decline on record, with shares plummeting 25% following preliminary second-quarter results that revealed several enterprise customers had postponed major capital spending projects.

Addressing these concerns, Krishna clarified that the delayed deals represent temporary budget deferrals rather than lost business. “Here’s the good news: about 40% of them have already closed in three to four weeks,” Krishna said, emphasizing that the underlying market demand remains robust. Despite the stock sell-off, IBM’s actual second-quarter financial performance was strong, posting a revenue of $17.16 billion—surpassing the Wall Street consensus estimate of $16.86 billion—and adjusted earnings of $2.93 per share, ahead of the predicted $2.86 per share.

Long-Term Outlook and Technological Hurdles

While the business roadmap points to initial revenue contributions by 2028, the ultimate economic scale of quantum computing is expected to materialize in the subsequent decade. Krishna stated that IBM is now “pretty convinced” that quantum computing will represent a trillion dollars of economic value by the end of the 2030s.

Achieving this scale will require overcoming significant engineering obstacles, including reducing physical error rates, managing extreme cooling requirements, and developing software that can seamlessly integrate quantum processors with existing classical cloud infrastructure. Nevertheless, with billions of dollars in public and private capital now committed, IBM is positioned to lead the transition of quantum technology from laboratory experiments into a foundational pillar of global industrial computing.
