A New Challenger in the Professional Laptop Market

Microsoft has officially unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra, a 15-inch notebook designed to compete directly with Apple’s MacBook Pro. According to MacRumors, the device is built for heavy-duty creative, software development, and AI workloads, with pricing starting at $2,599. The machine marks a significant shift in Microsoft’s hardware strategy, utilizing the Nvidia RTX Spark superchip, which integrates both an Arm-based Grace CPU and a Blackwell RTX GPU.

Hardware and Performance Capabilities

The Surface Laptop Ultra is positioned as the most powerful notebook in the Surface lineup. The hardware supports up to 128GB of unified memory, allowing for intensive local AI model execution. Windows Latest reports that the device features a new thermal architecture capable of maintaining sustained performance under heavy load, with Microsoft claiming the laptop retains over 99% of its power even when running on battery. The display is a 15-inch mini-LED touchscreen with a 3:2 aspect ratio, reaching up to 2,000 nits of peak HDR brightness.

Connectivity options have been expanded to include three USB-C ports, one of which supports “Magnetic Connect” charging, a USB-A port, an HDMI port, and an SD card reader. The device remains portable, weighing under 4.5 pounds and measuring less than 18mm in thickness. Users also benefit from a user-replaceable SSD, providing flexibility for future storage upgrades.

Targeting the Developer and Creative Ecosystem

By adopting the RTX Spark chip, Microsoft is aiming to bridge the gap between Arm-based efficiency and the need for native CUDA support in professional workflows. The laptop runs Windows 11 on Arm, with x86 compatibility managed through Microsoft’s Prism emulation layer. To encourage adoption among existing Mac users, the company is offering a trade-in program that provides up to $1,000 in cash back for those switching from an eligible MacBook.

Alongside the laptop, Microsoft announced the $5,999 Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a desktop station designed for developers requiring higher-tier AI training and inference capabilities. Both the laptop and the desktop unit are currently available for preorder, with official shipping set to commence on October 16, 2026. Microsoft’s move signals a broader push to capture the high-end creative market that has traditionally relied on Apple’s silicon ecosystem.
