Diplomatic and Media Delegations Targeted
A series of violent confrontations occurred in the occupied West Bank on October 16 and 17, as Israeli settlers targeted delegations of European diplomats, Catholic representatives, and international journalists. The incidents took place during the annual olive harvest, a period that has seen a documented surge in tensions between settlers and Palestinian farmers. According to EU Today, a diplomatic delegation including representatives from Belgium, France, and Poland, alongside members of the Catholic Church, was assaulted near the village of Taybeh. The attackers reportedly targeted vehicles bearing diplomatic plates and physically assaulted members of the group, including Bernard Baudoux, the mayor of the French town of Aulnoye-Aymeries.
In a separate but concurrent event, Hindustan Times reports that Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was beaten by masked settlers while documenting the harvest. Despite being clearly identified as press, Levine sustained injuries, drawing sharp criticism from the United States. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the administration was “disturbed” by the footage of the assault and has urged the Israeli government to “crack down” on such violence. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee denounced the act as “despicable” and called for a full investigation and prosecution of those responsible.
Official Responses and Conflicting Narratives
The violence has prompted varying reactions from Israeli and international officials. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot condemned the “revolting acts” and called on Israeli authorities to uphold international law by ensuring the safety of civilian populations. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot announced that Brussels would advocate for additional European Union sanctions against the perpetrators.
Conversely, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pushed back against the reports, framing them as part of a “coordinated campaign to smear Israel” and its residents in Judea and Samaria. The Prime Minister’s statement suggested that the diplomats failed to coordinate their movements with the Israeli military and questioned the impartiality of the visiting officials, specifically noting Mayor Baudoux’s political background. While the Israeli Foreign Ministry has issued a formal condemnation of the attacks and police have promised an investigation, the Prime Minister’s office warned against drawing premature conclusions before the facts are fully examined.
Rising Tensions in the West Bank
The recent attacks are part of a broader, month-long escalation in settler violence that has intensified as the annual olive harvest proceeds. Earlier this month, AFP photographer Jaafar Ashtiyeh was reportedly assaulted, suffering fractured ribs and the theft of his camera equipment. Human rights activists and diplomatic observers argue that the frequency of these confrontations highlights a lack of effective deterrence. As regional tensions remain high, international actors are pressing Israel to fulfill its obligations as an occupying power to protect non-combatants, including journalists and diplomatic personnel, from further harm in the coming weeks.
