Birmingham City have officially appointed former Manchester United football director John Murtough as their new director of football, filling a vacancy left by Craig Gardner’s departure in June. Murtough, 55, arrives following a stint in Italy as director of global development at Serie A side Atalanta, which he joined in April 2025. He will officially begin his new duties on Monday, following the club’s Championship fixture against Cardiff City.
The appointment marks a significant addition for the US-owned club as they push for sustained success under the ownership of Knighthead Capital Management. According to BBC Sport, Murtough’s broad remit will span the men’s first team, recruitment, data, performance, and the crucial pathway connecting the academy to senior football. He will also collaborate with Hope Powell to support the ongoing development of the Blues women’s team.
A Rigorous Background at Elite Clubs
Murtough brings extensive operational experience from across English football, having started his career as a sports scientist alongside David Moyes at Everton. He rose to become the Toffees’ head of performance before taking on the role of head of elite performance at the Premier League in 2012. In 2013, he moved to Old Trafford to support Moyes, eventually advancing to head of football development and later becoming Manchester United’s first official football director in March 2021.
During his tenure at Manchester United, Murtough oversaw operations and strategy across all football functions during a turbulent transitional era that saw multiple managerial changes and major player acquisitions. Training Ground Guru reported that his time in Manchester coincided with heavy scrutiny over high-profile recruitment, including big-money signings such as Jadon Sancho and Antony, alongside successful academy modernization and the establishment of the club’s professional women’s team in 2018. He departed Old Trafford in April 2024 as part of restructuring under incoming co-owners INEOS.
Current Form and Strategic Next Steps
Murtough steps into his new role while Birmingham City sit fourth in the Championship table, buoyed by three consecutive victories since the international break under head coach Chris Davies. In a club statement, Birmingham confirmed that Davies will report directly to Murtough, establishing a clear reporting line that bridges ownership ambitions with technical execution on the pitch.
The search for Gardner’s successor took several months after the former Blues midfielder stepped down to take a break from the game following a turbulent period that included relegation to League One and a subsequent title-winning recovery. With Knighthead Capital Management investing heavily in infrastructure, including the ongoing Sports Quarter project, Murtough’s arrival provides the senior football leadership structure previously identified as missing by observers at St Andrew’s.
