A New Cultural Itinerary in Stratford
Academy Award-winning actress Dame Judi Dench has publicly endorsed a summer repertory season in Stratford-upon-Avon, encouraging theatergoers to expand their cultural itineraries beyond the town’s traditional Shakespearean offerings. In a newly released promotional video, Dame Judi highlighted the unique opportunity for audiences to experience the works of George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde alongside the historic theater repertoire of the town.
The upcoming season, scheduled to run from 12 August to 22 August 2026, is a collaborative effort between the Rother Street Arts House and the Tread the Boards Theatre Company, in association with the SHAW2020 Theatre Company. This partnership aims to bridge the gap between classic Victorian-era drama and the Shakespearean legacy that defines the Stratford-upon-Avon cultural landscape.
Repertory Programming and Artistic Vision
The programming centers on two seminal works of English literature: George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion and Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. The production of Pygmalion is directed by Jonas Cemm, the founder and Artistic Director of SHAW2020, and explores the classic narrative of transformation involving the phonetics professor Henry Higgins and the flower seller Eliza Doolittle.
John-Robert Partridge, Artistic Director of the Rother Street Arts House and Tread the Boards Theatre Company, is directing the staging of The Importance of Being Earnest. In a unique dual role, Partridge will also step onto the stage to perform as Henry Higgins in the Pygmalion production, showcasing the logistical and creative integration required for such a concentrated repertory schedule.
Academic Engagement and Public Dialogue
Beyond the theatrical performances, the organizers have scheduled a free public event titled “In Conversation: Pygmalion & The Importance of Being Earnest” on 15 August 2026. This panel discussion is designed to provide deeper insight into the rehearsal process and the enduring influence of both dramatists.
The panel, hosted by Jonas Cemm, will feature a diverse group of experts and practitioners, including John-Robert Partridge, author and journalist Neil Titley, Vanessa Heron, Chair of The Oscar Wilde Society, and Ivan Wise, editor of The Shavian journal for The Shaw Society. This event underscores the organizers’ intent to foster an academic appreciation for the works alongside their commercial presentation.
