A High-Profile Arrival at Jurong East

SINGAPORE – The Singapore Premier League (SPL) landscape shifted significantly on August 22, 2026, as FC Jurong—formerly known as Albirex Niigata Singapore—officially unveiled international football star Keisuke Honda. The arrival of the 40-year-old Japanese veteran at Jurong East Stadium drew over 400 fans, signaling a major push by the club to transition from a consistent top-tier contender to the league’s dominant force.

Honda, whose decorated career includes stints at CSKA Moscow, AC Milan, and three World Cup appearances for Japan, has signed on as a player for the 2026-27 campaign. His presence is intended to provide more than just on-field production; club leadership has explicitly cited his professional standards and winning mentality as the primary catalysts for their championship aspirations.

Building a Championship Culture

The club, which finished third in the 2025 season, has undergone a strategic rebranding and internal restructuring. Under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Jaswinder Singh and with the support of technical director Keiji Shigetomi, FC Jurong is looking to dismantle the recent hegemony of reigning champions Lion City Sailors. Honda’s arrival coincides with the club securing a new partnership with Takasago Singapore, underscoring a broader effort to professionalize the organization’s operations.

“I want to build a culture,” Honda remarked during his unveiling. “My job is not just to play but to contribute my experience to young players. If we build a good culture, which means good professionalism and high standards, we have a high chance to be champions this season.”

Balancing Business and Football

Beyond his playing career, Honda maintains an active profile as an entrepreneur. As a co-founder and general partner of the investment firm X&KSK, which recently raised 15 billion yen, Honda is navigating a complex dual career. He stated that he intends to manage his time between his venture capital commitments in Japan and the U.S. and his training obligations in Singapore, aiming to remain present for the majority of the season.

While Honda has previously expressed a long-term ambition to manage the Japan national team, he emphasized that his current focus remains strictly on the success of FC Jurong. His decision to continue his playing career rather than transition immediately into coaching highlights a continued desire for on-pitch competition, even at the age of 40.

The Road Ahead

The 2026-27 SPL season is set to commence on September 11, with FC Jurong’s first competitive test arriving on September 13 against the Young Lions. For the club, the stakes are clear: they must translate the buzz surrounding Honda’s signing into consistent results to compete with the established depth of the Lion City Sailors and Tampines Rovers. Chairman Daisuke Korenaga has remained firm that the investment in Honda is a calculated strategic move to elevate the club’s performance floor, rather than a purely symbolic gesture.
