A nocturnal transformation

The 17th edition of the Singapore Night Festival (SNF) officially commenced on August 21, 2026, marking the start of a two-week cultural showcase that runs through September 5. The festival, Singapore’s largest nocturnal event, has effectively converted the historic Bras Basah.Bugis (BBB) precinct into a sprawling exhibition of light, folklore, and performance art. Launched by Low Yen Ling, Senior Minister of State for Culture, Community & Youth and Trade & Industry, the event features more than 70 distinct after-dark experiences.

The ‘Myths and Legends’ theme

This year’s theme, ‘Myths and Legends,’ serves as the conceptual anchor for the festival, aiming to bridge traditional storytelling with modern projection technology. The National Museum of Singapore (NMS) stands as a focal point for this narrative, hosting the ‘Tales of Earth and Sea’ performance by The Fox, The Folk. This production utilizes the museum’s iconic façade as a canvas for vivid projection mapping that reinterprets regional folklore.

Complementing the static installations is the Southeast Asian debut of ‘Birdmen’ by the Dutch group Close-Act Theatre. This interactive street performance features giant, illuminated stilt-walking pterodactyl puppets, emphasizing the festival’s focus on immersive, large-scale visual storytelling. The festival operates daily from 7:30 pm to 11:00 pm, with extended hours until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Competition and community engagement

Innovation remains a core component of the 2026 agenda with the introduction of the inaugural MALAM Projection Mapping Competition at The Cathay. Emerging artists from across Southeast Asia are competing to illuminate the building’s exterior. A panel of judges is scheduled to evaluate the entries on August 28, with the top five winning works set to be announced on August 29. These selections will remain on display for the duration of the festival.

To foster public engagement, the organizers have established three distinct Festival Villages:

  • Party on the Rise! (Canning Rise): Offers hands-on wayang kulit puppet-making, local culinary options, and after-hours museum access.
  • Maker’s Emporium (Capitol Singapore Outdoor Plaza): A marketplace dedicated to local craftsmanship, upcycling workshops, and community networking.
  • elsewhere (Armenian Street): Features a curated series of performances and installations, including ‘The Great Mythical Stampede’ by CHUNKIE Filmhouse.

Visitors are encouraged to explore these sites through the official festival portal at heritage.sg/sgnightfest, where ticketing information for specific programs is also available.
