Project Overview and Current Status
LOUISVILLE (Azat TV) – New concrete structures installed along Broadway in Louisville are drawing scrutiny from local drivers and residents as the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) continues work on a major safety initiative. The slabs, described as approximately one foot high and several feet long, have been placed near intersections along the busy corridor, currently marked by traffic cones and unfinished ground.
These installations are part of the US 150 Broadway Improvement Project, a federally funded endeavor managed by the KYTC. The project aims to enhance safety on Broadway between 9th Street and Baxter Avenue through a combination of physical infrastructure changes, including new pavement markings, signage, and traffic signal upgrades. Despite the scale of the work, officials have not yet provided a detailed public explanation of the specific functional purpose of these concrete medians.
Safety Concerns and Recent Incidents
The installation has coincided with a series of traffic incidents on the corridor, fueling public anxiety. On Thursday, two separate crashes were reported in the vicinity of the construction. Near 8th Street, a vehicle overturned in a two-car collision, resulting in minor injuries. Later that day, a TARC bus and another vehicle collided near 4th and Broadway, directly adjacent to one of the newly placed concrete structures. While Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) are investigating the causes, they have not confirmed whether the medians played a role in these specific events.
Local commuters have expressed significant apprehension regarding the new layout. Broadway typically functions with two to three lanes in each direction, with the outermost lane frequently utilized for informal parking. The medians now occupy portions of these lanes near intersections, effectively forcing drivers to shift lanes abruptly to make turns. Residents, including Perry Shanaquit, have characterized the structures as “stumbling blocks” that disrupt traffic flow and increase the likelihood of accidents, particularly during late-night hours.
Institutional Context
The US 150 Broadway Improvement Project is distinct from the city’s separate “Broadway All the Way” redesign effort, a Louisville Metro initiative aimed at long-term corridor improvements. This distinction has added to the confusion among residents who are uncertain about the intended outcomes of the current KYTC work. As of Friday, the KYTC has acknowledged requests for further information but has yet to issue an official statement clarifying the design goals or addressing the public safety concerns raised by the recent crashes.
