A man has been hospitalized with critical, life-threatening injuries after being struck by a motor vehicle in downtown Louisville on Sunday, July 19, 2026. According to official statements from the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), the collision occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m. at the busy intersection of West Broadway and South Second Street.
LMPD spokesperson Aaron Ellis reported that First Division officers were dispatched to the intersection immediately following the incident, where they located the injured pedestrian. A preliminary investigation conducted by responding officers indicates that the man was attempting to cross West Broadway within a designated pedestrian crosswalk. While he was crossing, a vehicle making a left-turn transition onto Broadway from South Second Street collided with him.
Immediately following the crash, the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene to administer aid and tend to the injured man until first responders and emergency medical personnel arrived. The victim was quickly transported by emergency services to the University of Louisville Hospital, where medical staff are currently treating him for severe injuries described by authorities as critical and life-threatening. LMPD confirmed that no other vehicles or individuals were involved in the collision.
The incident initially generated conflicting details regarding the victim’s mode of transport. A spokesperson for MetroSafe, Louisville’s emergency communications agency, had previously told local media outlet The Courier Journal that a scooter was involved in the collision. However, LMPD spokesperson Aaron Ellis later corrected this initial report, confirming that investigators found no scooter at the scene and clarifying that the victim was crossing on foot.
The LMPD Traffic Unit has launched a full investigation into the crash to reconstruct the sequence of events and assess potential traffic violations. Due to the active investigation and the heavy presence of emergency vehicles, authorities closed the intersection of West Broadway and South Second Street to all traffic, urging downtown commuters to utilize alternative routes. No charges have been announced as the investigation remains ongoing.
