Carrick Opens Door to January Window After Defensive Strain
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has indicated that the club will look to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window as part of a planned defensive rebuild over the coming year. Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of a fixture against Leeds United, Carrick acknowledged that winter opportunities will be evaluated to address vulnerabilities that have surfaced during a difficult start to the campaign.
The urgency for defensive reinforcements follows a summer transfer window in which United focused heavily on restructuring their midfield. The club invested a combined £155m to bring in Youri Tielemans for £35m, Andrey Santos for £50m, and Carlos Baleba for £70m. However, this midfield-heavy expenditure left defensive depth exposed, a shortcoming criticized by pundit Gary Neville and further exacerbated by an injury to Luke Shaw that forced young utility player Ayden Heaven to deputize out of position at left-back.
Addressing Lisandro Martinez’s Criticism and Internal Fallout
The defensive frailties and perceived lack of ambition sparked public tension earlier in the week when defender Lisandro Martinez criticized the club’s hierarchy. Martinez questioned the leadership’s overarching target to win the Premier League title by 2028, as outlined by CEO Omar Berrada, pointing to a summer where United were outspent in the market by promoted sides Hull and Ipswich despite securing Champions League qualification.
While the public outburst intensified fan discontent during a five-game winless run that has left United in the bottom half of the Premier League table after six matches, Carrick insisted the internal matter has been resolved. Martinez subsequently apologized on social media for the timing and public nature of his remarks rather than the underlying opinions. Addressing the club’s trajectory, Carrick defended United’s ambition, stating that everyone at Old Trafford is striving to close the gap and return to the top.
Squad Planning and Future Defensive Targets
Revamping the defensive line forms the third phase of United’s ongoing squad-building strategy, which addressed the attack and midfield over the previous two seasons. Club recruitment plans are focused on securing new center-backs and left-backs. During the summer, United explored options for a long-term successor to Luke Shaw—whose contract expires at the end of the current season—focusing primarily on England international Lewis Hall, though Newcastle ultimately deemed him unavailable and secured him on a long-term deal.
Uncertainties also surround Martinez’s long-term future at Old Trafford, with his current deal expiring at the end of the campaign, though it includes a club-held one-year extension option. Despite mounting pressure and four defeats from their opening nine matches across all competitions following Ruben Amorim’s departure, Carrick expressed confidence that he will receive the necessary time to shape the squad.
